3 Design Ideas for your ‘About’ Webpage

The ‘About’ page design of your website seems like it should be straightforward, but then you get down to it…. and there are so many questions?

Is this about me? the Business? Our Culture? Didn’t I already put some about info on my home page? I can’t come up with enough info to do this!

If this sounds familiar, here are 3 examples to help you sort out what you want to be on your about webpage.

1. Solopreneur a: Team of 1, selling a service

Break it down into sections: about the business, about you, about the process. Each section has a unique aspect of the ‘about’ that it is conveying to the visitors of this site. My client Shelley is a personal stylist.

On her ‘About’ page, she describes:

1. Her business and what she does

2. Who she is and her experience

3. The process of working with her

The end result is a beautiful about us page design that gives the user information in digestible portions to explain the process and encourage that user to become a client.

But what if you don’t have a service? What if you are an painter or jewelry designer? Here’s another about page design idea…

2. Solopreneur B: Team of 1, selling a product

If you are a creator, your work is very likely an expression of yourself. Give people a story behind the artwork you create. Describing who you are and why you are drawn to your craft is a great way to introduce yourself and will give your potential customers a personal view into your artwork. You can also add in some press features your work has received. This is also a great place to put some press or testimonials.

Break your About page down into your story, your experience, and your reviews. My client, Rachel, breaks down her page into:

  1. Her story and what attracted her to painting birds

  2. Where her work is featured

  3. Her background as a painter and education

Rachel, is a well known artist so we broke out her press onto it’s own page, but if you don’t have enough press coverage for a dedicated press page, this is a great place to note it!

Testimonials also do well sprinkled in here. The home page is another great place to let visitors know where you have been featured and what your clients have to say, but the home page design is for another day!

What if you have a team? Here’s an example for a small business with multiple team members…

3. Small Business with Multiple Team Members:

You and your team are the heart of your business. Your clients want to know that whoever they are going to work with (maybe one person, maybe all) or whoever designed the product they are about to buy, is going to be stellar.

In this case it might be a good idea to have an ‘About’ dropdown rather than having it all on one page.

Your ‘About’ Dropdown can include: About Us/Who We Are, Press, Press Kit or Work With Us.

The team at Benjamin Talks does just that. Their focus is on working with corporations and community outreach groups, so we left the ‘work with us’ link in the top nav.

We then broke out the Who We Are, Press, and Press Kit into separate pages underneath the umbrella of About to make it easy for users to hone in on what they want.

  1. Who We Are includes info on the group who runs this company and how they got started. This pages has following sections with their mission and why their mission is important.

Then it goes on to introduce the team members. I’d even encourage them to have a link out to their in-depth bios, but they wanted to keep it simple here.

  2. Press coverage for these mom-preneurs is deep, so we broke out their press into a separate page which is impressive and build credibility and trustworthiness.

  3. Press Kit is a great link to have if you do engage with press frequently. This contains all of your logos and brand guidelines, headshots and product images.

You can link to dropbox for simplicity or you can create a beautiful page for press engagement right on your site!
